Canary Islands - Passport & Visa Requirements

Passport Validity: Canadian citizens travelling to Spain (Canary Islands) require a valid passport. Ensure your passport has at least 6 months of validity beyond your planned return date and at least one blank page.

Visa: Canada is part of the Schengen visa-exempt countries. No visa is required for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. The Canary Islands are part of Spain and the European Union — standard EU entry rules apply.

ETIAS: Starting 2025, Canadian citizens will need to obtain an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) travel authorisation before entering the Schengen Area. Cost: approx. €7. Apply online at etias.com. Valid for 3 years or until passport expiry.

Health & Vaccinations

No specific vaccinations are required for travel to the Canary Islands. Routine vaccines (tetanus, hepatitis A) are recommended. The Canary Islands have an excellent public health system. European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is not applicable for Canadians — travel insurance with medical coverage is essential.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance including medical coverage and trip cancellation is strongly recommended. Healthcare in the Canary Islands is of a high standard, but costs for uninsured travellers can be significant.

Currency & Payments

Currency: Euro (€). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted throughout Tenerife. ATMs are readily available in Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz. Carry some cash for markets, tips, and smaller establishments.

Climate & Best Time to Visit

The Canary Islands enjoy a mild, spring-like climate year-round with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 28°C. Tenerife's north (Puerto de la Cruz) tends to be slightly cooler and greener than the south. Light layers are recommended for evenings and excursions to higher altitudes (Teide reaches 3,715 m — bring a warm jacket).

What to Pack

Clothing: Light summer clothing for the coast; a warm layer or jacket for the Teide excursion (altitude can be cold even in summer). Comfortable walking shoes are essential for guided tours.

Essentials: Sunscreen SPF 50+, sunglasses, hat, and a reusable water bottle. Power adapter: Type F (European 2-pin), 220V.

Language & Time Zone

Language: Spanish (Castilian). English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants. Your guide will be English-speaking throughout the tour.

Time Zone: Western European Time (WET) — UTC+0 in winter, UTC+1 (WEST) in summer. The Canary Islands are 1 hour behind mainland Spain. Montreal is 4–5 hours behind the Canary Islands depending on the season.
