Kenya - Passport & Visa Requirements & General Info

Passport Validity: Must have at least six months of validity beyond your planned departure date and at least one blank page.

Visa: Canadian citizens must obtain a Kenya eVisa prior to departure. Cost: approx. USD $51. Valid for 90 days. Apply online at evisa.go.ke to avoid queues on arrival. Processing time: 3–5 business days.

Health & Vaccinations

Yellow Fever: Required if arriving from a yellow fever-endemic country. Proof of vaccination may be requested at entry.

Recommended Vaccines: Hepatitis A & B, typhoid, and tetanus. Consult your travel health clinic at least 4–6 weeks before departure.

Malaria: Malaria prophylaxis is highly advised for all safari regions (Amboseli, Tsavo West, Tsavo East, Taita Hills). Speak to your doctor about the best option for you.

Travel Insurance

Climate & Best Time to Visit

Kenya has two dry seasons: January–March and June–October (peak safari season). Long rains: April–May. Short rains: November–December. Temperatures range from 15°C to 30°C depending on altitude and region.

What to Pack

Clothing: Neutral colours only on safari — khaki, beige, olive (avoid bright colours and white). Light layers for cool mornings and evenings.

Essentials: Sun hat, sunscreen SPF 50+, insect repellent (DEET-based), sturdy walking shoes, binoculars (strongly recommended).

Electronics: Power adapter Type G (British 3-pin), 220–240V. Most lodges offer USB charging points. Wi-Fi available in Nairobi hotels; limited or unavailable in remote parks.

Day 2: Nairobi — Arrival

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be welcomed by your French/English-speaking guide for your transfer to your hotel in Nairobi — the only capital city in the world with a national park on its doorstep. The name "Nairobi" comes from the Maasai expression Enkare Nairobi, meaning "cold water." Settle in, freshen up, and rest after your long flight.
